January 10, 2003 "Response to Comments"

Shortly after 9/11/01, in response to exaggerated concerns over the possible consequences of a casualty to a nuclear plant or its fuel, a group of 19 senior nuclear power authorities, all members of the National Academy of Engineering, prepared a study of the realistic consequences of the ultimate nuclear casualty, involving meltdown and compromise of containment.  These authors contributed to the preparation of the ANS "White Paper on Realism," concurring in the final draft.
